About

Sandbar's Stream is a voice-controlled smart ring worn on the index finger, using a touchpad and microphones that stay off until you press and hold. This launch adds Universal Dictation to the device, letting wearers push to talk into any app on iOS and hand off to a Mac without switching apps or reconnecting. It joins the two features Stream already shipped with, a Notes mode for capturing thoughts and a Chat mode for talking things through with an AI assistant, so all three now live inside a single ring. The pitch is aimed at people who want to offload thinking, drafting, and quick text entry to their voice without pulling out a phone or dictating openly into earbuds. According to the launch materials, dictation flows across devices in real time, and users can swipe on the ring to recall earlier notes and paste them into whatever app they are in. That cross-device continuity is the reason this update matters for anyone who already tried Stream at preorder and wanted it to work beyond the companion app. Sandbar is based in New York and was founded by Mina Fahmi, who worked at Bryan Johnson's Kernel and later at Magic Leap, and Kirak Hong, who worked at Google before joining CTRL-Labs, where the two met before Meta acquired that company in 2019 . Both previously worked on interface design at Meta before starting Sandbar , and the company frames Stream as "a mouse for voice" covering notes, assistant chat, and now system-wide dictation.

The one voice ring framing is actually a nice mental model. Most voice products give me three apps and a therapy bill.

Push-to-talk with no reconnection sounds simple until you realize how many voice apps completely fumble this. If it holds up on subway wifi I'm sold.

Genuine question from someone new to this space: what happens when I push-to-talk in a text field that already has native dictation open? Does it fight the OS or coexist?

Henrik Sølvberg4d ago

ok wait, universal dictation on iOS without app switching is the actual unlock here, not the ring branding. Bury the lede much?

Feels like the last serious voice product shipping before someone slaps an agent on top and calls it a coworker. Enjoy the calm before the autonomous storm.

That launch video pacing is tight but the voiceover felt slightly over-produced for what is essentially a productivity tool. Would've hit harder with one real user session.

Your Voice, Anywhere is fine but you're sitting on Notes, Chat, Dictation. One ring. Rewrite: One ring for every thought you have out loud.

Curious how the Mac and iOS states stay in sync when I switch mid-sentence. That handoff is where every cross-device voice tool I've tried quietly dies.
