About

Personal Computer is a new capability from Perplexity that securely connects to any folder to search, read, and write files locally, and can access and work across iMessage, Apple Mail, Calendar and other native Mac apps. It runs inside the Perplexity Mac app and extends the company's answer engine from a chat box into an orchestration layer that can take actions across a user's desktop, connectors, and browser. The launch matters because it pushes Perplexity past research-style Q&A and into agentic workflows on the machine itself. Instead of just answering questions in a chat box, the system acts as an orchestrator, and users can trigger the assistant to work across local files and apps. Practical examples include asking it to take a messy Downloads folder and sort it into clear project folders with sensible names, and activating it inside Notes by pressing both CMD keys so it can read a to-do list, reason about how to accomplish each task, and work across local files. The target audience is power users and professionals already paying for Perplexity's top tier: the rollout begins with Perplexity Max subscribers and people on the waitlist, with tasks that can start from an iPhone and continue on the Mac. Personal Computer was announced in March and was available on a waitlist basis before this official rollout, positioning it as Perplexity's answer to the growing field of on-device AI agents competing for a spot in daily desktop workflows.

Yeah that Nikita comment did a bit...

'Personal Computer.' Bold of them to name it after the thing I already have under my desk collecting dust.

Kofi Adebayo4/20/2026

Every answer engine eventually becomes a chatbot with tabs. Change my mind.

Mike Ngai4/20/2026

Orchestration across local files, native apps, AND the browser is the kind of sentence that either ships beautifully or corrupts my Downloads folder at 2am. Which one is this.

Olive Greenway4/20/2026

ok wait, the launch video actually lets the product breathe instead of doing the usual 'glitchy cyberpunk synth over 40 UI cuts' thing. rare restraint.

Priya Raman4/20/2026

Gating it behind Max plus the waitlist is a nice way to make the tier upgrade feel like a velvet rope. Smart copy on the tweet too, no adjectives doing the work.

Terry Distefano4/20/2026

Waitlist-to-paid conversion on these Mac agent tools is going to be the actual story, not the demo. Interesting.

Nikhil S.4/20/2026

sorry dumb question but when it reads my local files does that mean the model sees them or just an index of them? asking for my entire Notes app.

Hailey Chen4/20/2026

I'm still using Spotlight and a reasonable folder structure, so I'll circle back on this one in 2027.
