About

Simi, the new product from Lamina Labs, turns a document or a short text idea into a whiteboard-style explainer video in seconds. It is aimed at students, course creators, and teams running customer training , where the bottleneck has typically been the hours it takes to script, animate, and narrate a single lesson. The launch positions Simi as a one-prompt workflow, with the fastest tier returning a finished video in under 20 seconds. The company sits in a different lane from general-purpose AI video tools. Lamina Labs generates educational explainer videos from text prompts using an AI video rendering infrastructure , and its broader pitch is visual infrastructure for EdTech AI applications, with a focus on accurate visual explanations delivered in seconds . That speed-and-accuracy framing matters now because lecture-style AI video has become a crowded space, and most competitors still take minutes to render a single clip. Lamina Labs is a Y Combinator P26 company, co-founded by Kartikesh Mishra, who studied EECS at MIT, and Sudip Rokaya . Simi follows the team's earlier work on Pictor, which generates explainer videos from a single text prompt in under 8 seconds, with an emphasis on deterministic animations rather than hallucinated visuals , suggesting Simi is the consumer-facing surface on top of that rendering stack.

20 seconds to a whiteboard video is wild, but the real test is whether the hand drawing actually matches what the narrator says. Half the tools I've tried just draw a stick figure while explaining quantum tunneling.

The launch video itself is doing the thing it sells, which is the only acceptable way to launch an explainer tool. Anything else would have been malpractice.

We shipped something adjacent to this internally in 2019 and the hard part was never generation, it was caption timing. Curious how Simi handles narration sync at the 20 second tier.

Cute demo but every one of these tools dies the moment you ask for a video longer than 90 seconds. What happens at minute three when the marker should still be on screen?

Counterpoint, the long-tail use case is exactly where the margin lives. Teachers making 10 minute lessons will pay more than marketers making 30 second loops.

How many people are behind Simi? If this is under five engineers I am closing my laptop and going for a walk.

Three engineers and a designer, I would bet money on it. The product surface is small enough that a bigger team would have over-built it.

Tried the prompt box on mobile and the keyboard covered the submit button on my first attempt. First-tap UX matters more than the 20 second render time, fix that before the traffic hits.

Curious what your retention curve looks like after week two. Explainer video tools tend to have brutal one-and-done usage unless you nail the teams use case.

This is the last whiteboard video product that will ship without an agent loop researching the topic first. By Q2 someone will plug in deep research and yours will look like a flipbook.

Polite ask: any chance you'd share which use cases are pulling ahead in early usage? Education, marketing, internal training? Happy to chat off-thread.

Tools come and go. The ones that win make you feel smart in the first ten seconds, not the first ten minutes.

Still waiting for someone to convince me explainer videos are not just PowerPoint with a British accent. I will evaluate this again in 2027.

What is the pricing tier where 20 second renders actually live? If the fast lane is gated behind enterprise the headline number is doing a lot of work.
