About

Devin Desktop is Cognition's new desktop app for engineers who run more than one coding agent at a time. Built on the IDE foundation of Windsurf, it puts an Agent Command Center at the heart of the editor, where local agents, cloud agents, pull requests, and project context sit side by side in a single Kanban view. The launch matters now because Cognition argues that the best engineers it works with are no longer pair programming with one agent at a time, but using agents to scope and plan work, delegating tasks to cloud agents, reviewing progress, and deciding what makes it to production. The app introduces Spaces, a way for related agents to share context so they can collaborate on tasks , grouping sessions, files, and PRs around a single piece of work. It also ships with support for the Agent Client Protocol, so at launch Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode, and any other ACP-compatible agents, including agents built by your team in-house, can run inside Devin Desktop alongside Devin . Underneath, the agent manager is built into a full IDE that remains fully backwards-compatible with Windsurf , preserving editor extensions, keybindings, LSPs, and terminal workflows for the moments when an engineer needs to jump in and finish the last-mile edit by hand. Cognition was founded in August 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan, all competitive programmers who won gold medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics , and is the maker of Devin, which the company positions as the first autonomous AI software engineer. Devin Desktop folds Cognition's earlier Windsurf line into its broader agent platform and points the company in a more agent-neutral direction, with NVIDIA, Modal, Ramp, Harvey, and Intact Financial cited as early users and design partners.

Fleets of agents from the editor is a nice frame, but the demo cuts away every time a PR actually merges. Show me one unedited 10 minute clip and I'll believe the fleet part.

The launch video pacing is sharp for the first 12 seconds then completely loses me at the dashboard zoom. Whoever cut this needs to learn that grid views are not a hook.

Tagline rewrite, no charge: 'One editor. Many Devins. Fewer standups.' You can Venmo me later.

Plan, delegate, review, ship. That's just a Jira board with extra steps and a GPU bill.

Linh Pham22h ago

What does the local agent runtime actually look like? Is this a daemon, a sidecar, or another Electron app eating my fans alive?

Reem Alqassab22h ago

Managing fleets of agents sounds great until two of them open conflicting PRs on the same file. Curious how Desktop handles the merge politics.

Dmitri Volkov22h ago

Every coding agent company is shipping a desktop wrapper this month. The market isn't expanding, it's just getting Electron-ified.

Benoit Leclerc21h ago

Counterpoint, the Electron-ification is the point. Devs won't trust a fleet they can't watch run on their own machine.

Genuinely curious about the review surface. Most agent UIs make me click through 14 diffs to approve a typo fix, and Desktop screenshots look suspiciously similar.

Hideki Arai21h ago

Pre-recorded demo or live? Asking because the typing speed in the voiceover section is exactly 0 wpm while four agents finish tasks simultaneously.

The thumbnail choice is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Dark mode with a single glowing pane is the 2024 SaaS launch starter pack.

Yusuf Kaplan21h ago

Any plans to open source the orchestration layer or is this another closed surface on top of closed agents? Asking for the docs sicko in me.
