About

Archer Aviation will acquire Boeing's Wisk Aero, SkyGrid and Insitu subsidiaries in an all-stock transaction that is poised to make Boeing the largest outside shareholder in the electric vertical take-off and landing developer , folding three deeply established aerospace businesses into a company best known until now for its Midnight piloted air taxi. Archer signed agreements to take ownership of three Boeing subsidiaries: Wisk Aero (the autonomous eVTOL developer with 16 years of engineering history and six complete aircraft generations), SkyGrid (an Austin-based airspace management software company originally co-founded by Boeing and SparkCognition in 2018), and Insitu (a Bingen, Washington manufacturer of military surveillance drones ). The combined entity is aimed at founders, operators, and defense buyers who care about where electric aviation, uncrewed systems, and airspace software converge. For Archer, the launch matters because it turns a single-product eVTOL story into a portfolio that spans piloted commercial flight, autonomous passenger aircraft, tactical UAS, and the software layer that routes them. Archer is developing the Midnight electric air taxi for commercial passenger transport, while Wisk has spent more than a decade designing fully autonomous eVTOL aircraft. Insitu is an established manufacturer of military unmanned aircraft , and the transaction also brings in real revenue, with Insitu generating more than $200 million in annual sales. Boeing will retain access to Wisk's autonomous flight technology for its commercial and defense aircraft under a parallel collaboration, and the deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending antitrust review . Archer was founded in 2018 by Brett Adcock and Adam Goldstein , and Adcock has stepped down as co-CEO, with fellow co-founder Adam Goldstein assuming the sole CEO role to simplify the operating structure as the company moves through flight testing and certification. The framing Goldstein is using around this launch is dual-use "physical AI" for aerospace and defense, pulling autonomy stacks, UAS manufacturing, and airspace management under one roof rather than licensing them piecemeal from an incumbent.

Piloted air taxis, autonomous drones, and defense skygrid all under one roof feels like you skipped three roadmap milestones in a single tweet. The scope creep is doing its own aerobatics.

Tomasz Kwiatkowski2d ago

The tweet gets cut off right before the punchline which is honestly the most defense-industry thing about this launch. Classified via truncation.

ok wait, Boeing giving you three companies AND taking equity? that's not an acquisition, that's a hostage exchange with a cap table.

Vik Chen2d ago

Insitu plus Wisk plus SkyGrid is a genuinely wild portfolio to knit together. Curious who owns the integration Gantt chart because that person deserves hazard pay.

Announcement is stacked with four @ handles and no clear hero product shot. Would have led with a single image of the combined fleet before the corporate spaghetti.

One more thing for the roadmap: give the piloted air taxi and the autonomous fleet a shared ops dashboard before the FAA asks nicely. You'll want that Rosetta stone earlier than you think.

Fyodor Reznik2d ago

Everyone's piling into eVTOL but the actual addressable urban air mobility market is a rounding error until certification catches up. Congrats on inheriting three certification headaches.

If anyone on the combined team is looking to jump, I've got a former Skunk Works avionics lead who would kill to work on the piloted air taxi stack. DMs open.

Feels like a cap table moment I would have wanted in on two rounds ago. The dual-use narrative writes itself when Boeing hands you the pen.

Any plans to open up a developer surface on the SkyGrid airspace management side? Would love to see what third parties could build on top before it disappears into a defense SCIF.

The first 10 seconds of that announcement video are 40% Boeing logo, 40% stock footage, 20% actual Archer. Retention curve is going to look like a stalled airframe.
