DoorDash Air is the company's in-house drone delivery program, built inside DoorDash Labs and aimed at merchants and consumers on its existing marketplace. The launch matters because DoorDash has earned Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) , which authorizes it to operate its own commercial drone service rather than only routing orders through partners like Wing and Flytrex. DoorDash is the eighth drone operator to have earned this certificate , and the company plans to begin first-party drone deliveries this fall. The program is led by Harrison Shih, Head of DoorDash Air, and sits alongside the company's ground robot Dot as part of a multi-modal delivery network. DoorDash is designing an aircraft purpose-built for gaps it sees in local commerce, complementing the short- and long-range designs its partners are scaling, with a drone that is American-designed and built and most components made in the U.S. The strategic focus is less on the aircraft itself than on ground integration, including real-time inventory reconciliation and universal handoff systems for drive-throughs, rooftops, and merchant back doors. The economic logic centers on mid-range trips that are slow and expensive to fulfill with Dashers. More than 20% of orders on the DoorDash platform in 2025 traveled three to five miles, but those orders took on average nearly 25% longer than shorter deliveries, largely because finding the right Dasher takes longer for mid-range trips. Routing those to drones is meant to speed up delivery for essentials and hot food while freeing Dashers to concentrate on shorter, higher-density runs, all coordinated through DoorDash's Autonomous Delivery Platform.
